Description:

By 1608 Sir Cahir O'Doherty was the only remaining Gaelic chieftain still ruling in Ireland. His attempts to peacefully co-exist with the English government ultimately failed and he rebelled burning the city of Derry and killing the governor. Several months later he was hunted down and killed. His head was put on a pike in Dublin. This book reproduces three newsbooks that appeared in London that year. There is an introduction explaining the historical context and history of the O'Doherty name. Website www.odoherty1608.com

O'Doherty's Rebellion [ No Rating ] 2 May 2008
Rob Dougherty and Lulu have done a first rate job of publishing and making available at reasonable cost these otherwise unknown and inaccessible newsbooks, the precursors to newspapers, printed and sold in London immediately after Sir Cahir's killing in Donegal in 1608. The extreme prejudice of the English towards the Irish "barbarians" at the time is evident in the writing; however, Rob has inserted introductory material which puts these extreme anti-Irish sentiments into proper context. Of interest to anyone interested in O'Doherty/McDevitt histories, and especially so this year, the 400th anniversary of the rebellion. Highly recommended.
